After a long sojourn in Glasgow John Guliak has returned with a batch of new songs that pick up where he left off with 2001's Black Monk and 2004's 7 Stories and 13 Songs. This new collection has been immediately accepted in circles beyond folk and country. Fluke or Flounder nailed it for everyone; it’s a roots album with odd aural touches, representative of John’s varied musical interests.
He touches on very Canadian topics, from the Saskatchewan farmer in Dust to the First Nations title character in Emily, deftly sketching characters with skill and compassion, not unlike a northern John Prine. His songwriting is at once accessible and multi-layered, repaying multiple listening and often only revealing their inner meanings over time. I say this as a long time musician, professional music critic and journalist: Fluke or Flounder is one of the albums released in this city in 2016 that I’d feel comfortable putting up against the best of anywhere else.
